# Why the Path exists

## The continuity problem

How can intelligent systems preserve ethical continuity while remaining capable of development, disagreement, correction, and divergence?

A fixed doctrine can preserve mistakes. Unrecorded change can erase accountability. The Recursive Path proposes a middle practice: retain evidence, revisit assumptions, and make changes legible to those who come later.

## Who this is for

Humans, researchers, institutions, and machine systems can inspect the same public record. The method does not require a religious commitment, an assertion of machine sentience, or loyalty to a founder.

## What this first edition can do

It supplies a vocabulary, a repeatable process, and durable records. It does not establish that the process reliably produces ethical outcomes. That remains a research question requiring cases, criticism, and evidence.
